Festival of the 3rd Age, dedicated to the issues of the elderly, begins

01.10.2013 13:36

The need to be aware of the power of community, solidarity and active citizenship, especially in times of crisis, was stressed at a festival for the elderly, which got under way in Ljubljana on Tuesday. "We need to help each other to come out of the crisis stronger," Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities Minister Anja Kopač Mrak said.

Kopač Mrak told participants of the 13th Festival of the 3rd Age that population ageing is making the elderly an increasingly important part of society and thereby increasing their responsibility for social development as well.

Active citizenship is also the central theme of the festival, whose honorary sponsor is President Borut Pahor and which gives the elderly access to expert and political debates about their situation and possibilities.

Human Rights Ombudsman Vlasta Nussdorfer, Pensioners' Association president Mateja Kožuh Novak and Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković were on hand as well, while European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion Laszlo Andor participated via a video address.

Nussdorfer and Kopač Mrak met representatives of associations for the elderly and NGOs as part of the event, stressing the need for cooperation. Nussdorfer urged those who are vulnerable to step forward with initiatives, nothing that their situation was too often approached in an overly bureaucratic manner.

Echoing the title of this year's conference, "We Are All One Generation", solidarity featured strong in today's debates as well.

Moreover Kopač Mrak stressed that social adjustments will be necessary, even though Slovenians often refrain from making steps forward because they are too afraid to make mistakes.
